Sam Norledge has recently joined DBC founding member LMG as their head of smart buildings. He will be on the nima stand (D440) at Digital Construction Week next week representing buildingSMART UK & Ireland (bSUKI), as part of his role in their ‘IoT and Interoperability project’ that he is now acting as the DBC’s representative on.
Connected to the project, he has also written an article for PBC Today on The power of BIM-IoT integration to drive ESG and demonstrate true ROI with input from fellow DBC members that includes the diagrams below from Brian Coogan at Ethos Engineering and Daniel Watson at Hereworks.
The idea of the article is to prompt discussion about the progression from BIM in Digital Construction to Digital Twin in (digital) operations, as well as explore the vital role of BIM-IoT integration in the delivery of Digital Operations and its alignment with operational practices.
Sam uses the term Digital Buildings as we do at the DBC, as a catch-all for other overlapping terms (e.g. smart, intelligent, connected, autonomous, etc), i.e. to describe buildings that use technology to create spaces that are secure, efficient and sustainable.
As he explains in the article, the AEC industry has demonstrated significant savings in the design and build phase but it’s crucial to recognise that 80% of a building’s expenses occur during its usage. This is where the DBC can help through members collaborating to show how true value can be unlocked including maximising savings by focusing on this operational phase.
